The Old Quarter is the most convenient base for most first-time visitors. However, the Old Quarter is not the only area worth considering. The French Quarter offers wider streets, elegant architecture and several of the city's leading luxury hotels. Ninh Binh
Often referred to as the "Ha Long Bay on land", Ninh Binh is one of Vietnam's most spectacular destinations. Ha Long Bay

Unlike most destinations in Vietnam, deciding where to stay in Ha Long Bay isn't simply about choosing a hotel. For most travellers, an overnight cruise is the highlight of the experience. Spending the night on the bay allows you to enjoy peaceful mornings, sunset views and activities such as kayaking, cave visits and swimming, long after the day-trip boats have returned to shore.
If you prefer to stay on land, Bai Chay is the most convenient area. It's home to a wide range of hotels, restaurants and entertainment, while also providing easy access to the cruise terminals. Sapa

It's one of the country's most scenic destinations and a favourite among hikers, photographers and anyone looking to experience a slower, more authentic side of Vietnam.

- Consider staying outside town if: You prefer peaceful rice terrace views and a quieter atmosphere
For most first-time visitors, Sapa Town is the best place to stay. It offers the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, cafés and tour operators while providing easy access to attractions such as Fansipan Mountain, Cat Cat Village and the region's famous trekking routes. Staying in town is especially convenient if you're arriving by overnight train or bus and want everything within easy walking distance.
If you're looking for a more peaceful experience, consider staying in one of the mountain retreats just outside Sapa. These properties are surrounded by rice terraces and rolling hills, offering spectacular sunrise views and a much quieter atmosphere than the town centre. While you'll need short taxi rides to reach restaurants and attractions, many travellers find the scenery more than worth the extra effort.
Two or three nights is ideal for most visitors. This gives you enough time to complete a guided trek, visit one or two traditional villages, ride the cable car to Fansipan and enjoy the mountain scenery without feeling rushed.

Hue
Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue is a destination rich in history, culture and architecture. Home to the magnificent Imperial City, royal tombs and the picturesque Perfume River, it offers a slower pace than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City while providing some of the country's most fascinating historical attractions. Hue is an excellent destination for travellers who enjoy exploring Vietnam's cultural heritage.

For most visitors, staying on the southern bank of the Perfume River is the best option. It also provides convenient access to boat trips along the Perfume River and excursions to Hue's famous royal tombs.
If you're looking for a quieter stay, several boutique hotels and luxury resorts can be found just outside the city centre. These properties offer more spacious grounds, beautiful river views and a peaceful atmosphere while still being only a short taxi ride from Hue's main attractions.

Da Nang
With its long sandy beaches, modern skyline and central location, Da Nang is one of the best places to stay in Vietnam. One of Da Nang's biggest advantages is its location. Hoi An is only around 30 minutes away, Ba Na Hills can be reached in less than an hour and the scenic Hai Van Pass and imperial city of Hue are both easy day trips. Many travellers choose Da Nang as their main base before making shorter visits to the surrounding destinations.
Three to five nights is ideal for most visitors. This gives you enough time to enjoy the beaches, experience the city's excellent food scene and take several memorable day trips without constantly changing hotels.
